Concerta Review – 3.2/5

What is Concerta?

Concerta is an ADHD medication also known as Methylphenidate HCL. Medication is the key word here, because this is not like most pills we review on this site.

We mostly look at supplements for brain function and health, and this isn’t a supplement, it’s a medication.

It’s only available with a prescription from a doctor.

Concerta is manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, which is owned by pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson. Details of how to contact Janssen can be found here.

Concerta Effects

Concerta increases attention span, improves focus, controls behavioural problems and enhances listening skills.

It also reduces fatigue.

It does this by stimulating the central nervous system and altering levels of brain chemicals, specifically, dopamine and norepinephrine. It’s also used to tread ADD and narcolepsy.

Concerta is an extended-release pills and its effects can last up to 12 hours. It can be used by both children and adults.

Concerta vs. Adderall

Concerta and Adderall are quite similar. They are both used to treat ADHD and both have side effects and the potential for misuse. See a detailed side-by-side comparison here.

Concerta Ingredients

Concerta’s only active ingredient is methylphenidate, which is a psychostimulant.

Other ingredients include butylated hydroxytoluene, carnauba wax, cellulose acetate, hypromellose, lactose, phosphoric acid, poloxamer, polyethylene glycol, polyethylene oxides, povidone, propylene glycol, sodium chloride, stearic acid, succinic acid, synthetic iron oxides, titanium dioxide, and triacetin.

Concerta Dosage

Recommended dosage is 18-72mg per day, depending on age and tolerance. It should be taken twice a day, with or without food. It is crucially important to follow the correct dosage, as an overdose of methylphenidate could be fatal. See a breakdown of dosage by age here.

Concerta Side Effects

The risks and side effects of taking Concerta are many, and caution should be taken during use. It should not be taken by patients with a history of drug dependence or alcoholism, as they may find it addictive. It should also be avoided by anyone with the following medical conditions:

  • Anxiety
  • Glaucoma
  • Tourette’s syndrome or tics
  • Narrowing of the esophagus, stomach or intestines
  • Cardiac abnormalities

Concerta should not be taken with Monoamine Oxidase (MAO) inhibitors as the combination could be serious and even fatal.

Possible side effects include sleeping problems, headaches, vomiting, weight loss, irritability, nervousness, loss of appetite and nausea. In children and adolescents, it may also cause upper abdominal pain.

**Drinking alcohol should be avoided while taking Concerta as it may cause it to be released into the blood stream too quickly.**

Concerta Reviews

Brain Pill Reviews rated Concerta very highly for ingredients, effectiveness and value for money, but Brain Pill Advisor warned against using it altogether.. You can read real, honest reviews from patients who are taking Concerta on Patients Like Me and WebMD. Reviews there reported it being extremely effective for managing ADHD. Clearly, it works very well.

Buy Concerta

Concerta is only available via prescription so it’s not possible to get hold of it without seeing a doctor. Getting hold of it any other way is illegal and extremely dangerous. A box of 10 tablets can cost anywhere between $60 and $90. For a price guide showing average prices of Concerta, see here.

Concerta Summary

Concerta is an effective medication for the management of ADHD, but comes with a list of side effects which must be taken into consideration.

Concerta does improve mental performance, but those who are just looking for something to give them an edge are looking in the wrong place; this pill is purely for the treatment of ADHD.

Even so, while it does provide immediate relief, the long-term side effects may not be worth it. If you think that Concerta might be beneficial to you, consult a doctor, but this is not something to play around with and we would recommend only using it as a last resort.
